During this reporting period, the research team:

  • Completed installing research equipment in Jordan and Yemen and continued on-farm trails. The research equipment was installed in the UAE and Oman in the previous quarter. The National Research Institute of Rural Engineering, Water and Forests (INRGREF) received and installed soil sensors to measure soil moisture and salinity. In the upcoming quarter, two weather stations will be installed to measure air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation. 
  • Finalized the workplan and budget for the research team in Yemen. The technology platform will be installed the Water and Environment Center’s Research Farm at Sana’a University. Sana'a University. The near-real time irrigation systems will be compared with traditional irrigation scheduling methods on fruit orchards in a series of farmer's fields. The series will begin with four farms and will expand as the demonstration of new irrigation scheduling method is scaled up.
  • Began work on a website for data integration and sharing. The website will allow participating research centers to upload and share collected irrigation and weather data. 

Upcoming quarter projects include:

  • Biophysical and socio-economic characterization at the project research sites
  • Dataset integration and sharing via a project website
  • Training preparation and dissemination of technical bulletins and newsletters

-        Continued data collection from the field, including biophysical and crop management data, and sensor systems data.
-        Socioeconomic survey conducted in order to describe the key irrigated farming systems, farm typology and business profiles in 17 farms located in 11 agro-ecological zones (16 geographic locations).
