In suitable hydrogeological settings, aquifers can temporarily store treated wastewater via Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) for later recovery. Subsurface storage and recovery are often less expensive than traditional surface storage; however, implementers of MAR with treated wastewater must consider the potential to recover the recharged water, as well as environmental and human health risks. In this project, researchers in Oman and Jordan will use data from existing MAR schemes to consider the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and safety of this technique and develop policy recommendations so that governments in the region are better equipped to evaluate, implement, and regulate such schemes.
